Debora Baptista: Is the Young Woman a Psychopath?

What is the reason a woman kills her husband in his sleep, smashing his head with a bottle full of stones, and lie about it cold-hearted during the interrogatory in court? What is the reason a woman does not want to see her first-born child, after giving birth to him? A psychopath. Our main character is deranged. We can see her description similar to a psychopath behavior. An antisocial, impaired empathy, impaired remorse, bold, disinhibited with egotistical traits person. She is an absolutely heartless woman that does not care about the beautiful things in life. It is easy to quickly fall into judgment and even more if our main character is a woman. What if we stop and take time to think and try to ask the right questions, as what is the level of suffering a woman is going through that her only way out is to kill her husband? What is the misery she is living in that her maternal instincts have completely vanished?

There is a very thin line between madness and the desperation to escape from a world that does not listen to your shouting for help. The actor that represents ‘Young Woman’ has to be very aware of her inner feeling, of a lifetime of not having a voice, a lifetime of trying to speak up and people interrupting her. Suffocating inside, you spirit lungs are running out of oxygen and the people that surrender you are watching without caring about you dying inside. The character can easily look as a selfish person that kills and lies because she is lazy and a coward. But there is a lot of ‘Young Woman’ awkward conduct that makes the audience easy to be empathetic to her even if she is killing or refusing to breastfeed her child.
